The answer to the question about the most successful Olympic nation depends on how success is measured: by the results of the last Games, by the total number of medals over history, or by effectiveness relative to population size.

Leader of the Last Games: Norway

The most successful country at the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo was Norway. The team of this Scandinavian country won 41 medals, including 18 gold, 12 silver, and 11 bronze.

The United States came in second, winning 33 medals, while the Italian team, as the host, won 30 awards. Norway set a new Olympic record for the number of gold medals at a single winter Games.

The secret of the Norwegians' success lies not in the large population size, but in the unique system of athlete preparation. In Norway, children under twelve are prohibited from fixing results or taking places in tournaments, which removes early pressure and allows each child to try different sports. There is no culling of the weak, and they try to keep as many children in sports as possible, and it is from such a system that the greatest Olympian in history, Johannes Kjølebo, emerged, winning six gold medals at the 2026 Games, bringing his total to eleven.

Absolute Leaders Throughout History

If we look at the overall statistics of all the Olympic Games, the leadership belongs to The United States. The US team has won 3128 medals.

Russia is in second place with 2011 medals. Soviet athletes participated in 18 Olympics and always occupied places not lower than second in the overall tally.

In third place is Germany, which has accumulated about 1875 medals.

Conclusion

Therefore, the title of the most successful Olympic nation cannot be attributed to one country:

  • Norway — the most successful at the last Winter Games-2026, demonstrating absolute dominance in winter sports.
  • The United States — the undisputed leader in the total number of awards over history.
  • Russia — second in the overall historical tally, maintaining the status of one of the greatest Olympic powers.
